North House Architects is a full-service architecture and design practice based in Grand Haven, Michigan. Founded by principal architect Joe Filippelli, the studio specializes in finely crafted modern residences that respond to the unique character of the Great Lakes region. Our work is guided by a belief that architecture should balance the rational and the poetic, resulting in homes that perform in demanding environments and inspire daily life.
We approach each project as a process of discovery. Rather than beginning with preconceived solutions, we engage deeply with the potential of a site and the aspirations of our clients. The outcome is a body of work that is thoughtful, enduring, and rooted in place.
North House has been recognized with multiple AIA awards, and our projects have been featured in national and international publications, including The New York Times. The practice is informed by Joe’s nearly two decades of experience working with world-renowned design offices. Before founding North House, Joe was a Project Architect at Olson Kundig in Seattle, where he led projects across the West Coast, Hawaii, and British Columbia. He also practiced at Morphosis Architects in Los Angeles, a Pritzker Prize winning firm.
Joe holds a Master of Architecture degree with high honors from the University of Michigan’s Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning. Born and raised in rural Ohio, he developed an early connection to the land and a respect for craft that continue to shape the ethos of the practice today.
