Cattail

Nestled into a sloped site overlooking a protected wetland, the Cattail house is designed to follow the natural curve of the land, maximizing panoramic views while minimizing its presence within the landscape. The home gently arcs around the wetland, allowing each space to engage directly with the surrounding trees, native grasses, and ever-changing light. Generous use of glass offers a constant connection to nature.

The material palette draws from both regional traditions and contemporary sensibilities. A hand-made linear brick clads the exterior and extends into the landscape as retaining walls, forming a welcoming auto court and grounding the structure to the sloping terrain. The roof—crafted from slate—features a unique razor-edge detail that lends a crisp, modern profile while quietly referencing the pitched forms of historic homes nearby. Inside, warm wood finishes create a soft, tactile contrast to the more robust exterior, offering a sense of calm and familiarity.

Designed for an aging couple, the house balances privacy with hospitality. The layout is intuitive and accessible, providing comfort for daily living while allowing the home to expand gracefully to accommodate family and guests. Carefully placed openings, thoughtful transitions, and layered materials create a sense of refuge without seclusion—making the home feel both rooted and welcoming, modern yet timeless.
